- Soudal-Quick-Step sports director Geert Van Bondt: "Remco comes here from an altitude training camp and will be very motivated, especially as he will be present at the start as the defending champion and owner of the rainbow jersey. He can count on good teammates, who have a strong condition, and this makes us confident. We will see what role Julian will have; he knows the course and this race suits him perfectly, and the most important thing is that he can now train pain-free and be at the start. We’ll also need to see if the wind and the rain expected on Sunday can influence the race, but as we said, the confidence is there."

- Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar Team) won the women's 2022 Liege-Bastogne-Liege Femmes.

- The 2023 Liege-Bastogne-Liege is being held Sunday, April 23.

- See the story below about Bernard Hinault's ride in the snow at the 1980 Liege-Bastogne-Liege.  It is one of the all-time great stories in cycling...

In 1980, Bernard Hinault (Renault) rode to an epic Liège-Bastogne-Liège victory in the snow.  It was already snowing at the start and according to rider Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle, some riders picked up their rider numbers and promptly went home.  At kilometer 45, Hinault, who had just one teammate left in the race (!), seemed ready to abandon as well when his directeur sportif Cyrille Guimard told him a climb was approaching and the effort would allow him to warm up!  At kilometer 70, 110 riders of 174 had already abandoned.  Only 21 riders made it to the finish.  How bad was it?  Duclos-Lassalle (11th) told L'Equipe in 2010 that he doesn't even remember finishing.  Hinault told L'Equipe that he has never fully regained sensation in two fingers.  Many of the abandoned riders were staying warm at the Ramada 200 meters from the finish line when Hinault rode by.  Hinault, who knew they were there watching behind the windows, saluted them from his bike "like a general reviewing his troops."  (L'Equipe)

The L'Equipe photo pictured above is one of the all-time great photos in pro cycling history.  I found it on display on the L'Equipe stand at a book fair in Paris in February, 2006 as L'Equipe celebrated its 60 year anniversary.

- Sports Director Valerio Piva: "Liège-Bastogne-Liège is a good race for Greg to start this block of Classics and we know that every year after the Tour de France he is very motivated and in strong shape so, we will line up with him as our leader. Last year, Greg was here and was in a really good position, making it into the final selection but he had some bad luck with a late crash so I hope he will be strong again on Sunday and we can try to race for the best result possible. We will have a good team to support Greg with the majority of our La Flèche Wallonne riders including Simon Geschke and Alessandro De Marchi, who both produced good performances, here. Michi Schär also comes in to complete our roster so I think we can be confident for Sunday’s race."

- Greg Van Avermaet (CCC Team) will ride Liege-Bastogne-Liege: "I was happy with my legs and condition yesterday at Amstel Gold Race so, after taking a day to think about it, I have decided to line up at Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday. I think I have managed to maintain my form from the cobbled Classics to the Ardennes and with the new finish in mind, I think I have a good chance to make a nice result. For sure, I will not be lining up as a favorite but I will line up motivated to do my best and end the Classics season well."

- Sports Director Valerio Piva, CCC Team: "Despite a long Classics season, Greg had good sensations yesterday and is not feeling too tired so, with an easy week this week, he should recover well and be in a good position to start Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The new finish will suit Greg more than the previous editions and it will probably mean the race will open up earlier than usual."

Notes from the 2018 Liege-Bastogne-Liege

- Anna van der Breggen following her win in the 2018 LBL: "I felt quite good today.  It was quite hard, [Amanda Spratt] did really good.  I was there with Megan in the second group, but Canyon-SRAM was there with a lot of riders as well. So it was a bit of a gamble, whether we were going to ride or not.  You don’t want to react too early, because that’s really hard.  But you don’t want to be too late, so it was quite tactical. And in the end, it was just really hard. I was happy I could catch her on the penultimate climb.  [Amanda] is in great form.  When I caught her, she was straight on my wheel. I know that finish climb is pretty hard and she had already done quite an effort up front, but you never know. Still, I felt good today, so I was quite sure I could drop her on that last climb.  It has been a good week for us.  With Chantal [Blaak] winning the Amstel Gold Race and I won the other two races. It has also been a tough week, with three hard races in one week. There was a lot of pressure, so I’m really glad we could finish it off like this. I’m happy the girls were riding like this today. They kept me at the front on the downhill and they chased, and they gave me confidence. That’s worth a lot."

- Bob Jungels (Quick-Step Floors) following his LBL victory: "To be honest, this came as a surprise. I didn’t believe I could pull it off until I saw that nobody was behind me as I was approaching the finish line. Yesterday evening I watched together with Julian the 2011 edition, when the winning move was made on Roche-aux-Faucons, and I made my attack in the same place. I was waiting for this victory for a long time and to finally get it is pretty unreal."

Ben King
Serge Pauwels
Tom-Jelte Slagter
Jacques Janse van Rensburg

- Ben King (Team Dimension Data): "I think Tom and Serge have shown really inspiring fight and good form at both Amstel Gold and Fleche. The fact that Tom was disappointed with 12th at Fleche is a good indicator of what he possibly expects out of Liege-Bastogne-Liege. Those guys deserve our full support on Sunday. I hit the ground pretty hard at Fleche so I’m hoping to be fully recovered and be able to contribute as much as I can to the goals of the team."

- Quick-Step Floors team roster for LBL:

Julian Alaphilippe (FRA)
Rémi Cavagna (FRA)
Philippe Gilbert (BEL)
Bob Jungels (LUX)
Enric Mas (ESP)
Maximilian Schachmann (GER)
Pieter Serry (BEL)

- Davide Bramati (Quick-Step Floors directeur sportif): "Liège-Bastogne-Liège is one of the hardest one-day races of the calendar and if you look over the course, you can see that is has everything needed to turn into a war of attrition. Up until this point, our classics campaign has been a sublime one, as we enjoyed success after success, and we won’t hide the fact we would like to draw the curtain on a high note. Everybody’s motivated for the final challenge of this spring, the confidence and enthusiasm in the team are huge after Flèche Wallonne and we are ready to let the legs do the talking on Sunday."

- Team Sunweb roster for Liege-Bastogne-Liege:

Tom Dumoulin (NED)
Johannes Fröhlinger (GER)
Simon Geschke (GER)
Chad Haga (USA)
Chris Hamilton (AUS)
Michael Matthews (AUS)
Sam Oomen (NED)

- Aike Visbeek (Team Sunweb directeur sportif): "Our goal for Liège is to bring Tom, Sam, Michael and Simon into the final to give us a variety of cards to play. A few changes to the parcours make the final 80 kilometres more demanding than in previous years which means that the final could start earlier and more riders will try their luck by attacking, ultimately making the race harder to control. The positioning in the last 80 kilometres will be important for us to save that little bit of extra energy that we will need to use when the race will be decided."

- Anna van der Breggen (Boels-Dolmans) won the 2017 Women's Liege-Bastogne-Liege.  Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) won the 2017 men's race.
