Race Report, Stage 18
Cahors – Angoulême, 211km
Alberto faces the TT “calm and concentrated because it’s
the most important day of my life”
A relaxed and happy Alberto Contador spent his first day in the maillot
jaune.
After Stage 18, and looking ahead to the definitive individual time trial
at Cognac, he said he was “calm, concentrated, and isolated from all this
mess around me. I expect to do the TT as well as possible, because tomorrow
is the most important day of my life.”
Contador knows that the day’s suffering will be short-lived, and he’s
up to the challenge. “Until today I won’t see the TT, but Johan Bruyneel
went yesterday evening. I think I’ll benefit from the fact that the road
is not too bad, although the fundamental factor will be the wind.”
Stage 18 was a comfortable enough stage without problems, except the
seconds that Cadel Evans took at the end. “I could keep a good pace and
believe that I’ll be able to be okay tomorrow. I know that Evans is very
strong, but it’s important to keep in mind that he’s the one who has to
recover 1:50 on me, not the other way around. Because of that, I’m
calmer.”
A breakaway succeeded in finishing over 8 minutes ahead of the pack.
Cadel Evans managed to stay in front of a split in the peloton, and gained
3” on Contador.
