- 30 years ago, at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Bernard Hinault earned one of the greatest victories in pro cycling history.  And "earned" would be an understatement.  It was epic...

30 Years Ago, In the snow

It was 30 years ago, in 1980, that Bernard Hinault (Renault) rode to an epic Liège-Bastogne-Liège victory in the snow.  It was already snowing at the start and rider Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle recently told French sports daily L'Equipe that he is sure some riders picked up their rider numbers and promptly went home.  At kilometer 45, Hinault, who had just one teammate left in the race (!), seemed ready to abandon himself when his directeur sportif Cyrille Guimard told him a climb was approaching and the effort would allow him to warm up!  At kilometer 70, 110 riders of 174 had already abandoned.  Only 21 riders made it to the finish.  How bad was it?  Duclos-Lassalle (11th) told L'Equipe he doesn't even remember finishing.  Hinault told L'Equipe at the Fleche Wallonne last week that he has never fully regained sensation in two fingers.  Many of the abandoned riders were staying warm at the Ramada 200 meters from the finish line when Hinault rode by.  Hinault, who knew they were there watching behind the windows, saluted them from his bike "like a general reviewing his troops."  (L'Equipe)

The L'Equipe photo pictured above is one of the all-time great photos in pro cycling history.  I found it on display on the L'Equipe stand at a book fair in Paris in February, 2006 as L'Equipe celebrated its 60 year anniversary.
