- Hard to believe that we have already arrived at the last of the spring classics.  Philippe Gilbert (BMC) is defending champion at L-B-L and is looking for a big win with his new team.  6th at Amstel Gold Race last Sunday and 3rd at Fleche Wallonne on Wednesday, Gilbert has been improving.  Gilbert swept the "Ardennes Classics" last year.  At LBL in 2011, Gilbert found himself with Andy and Frank Schleck in the finale...and had no trouble beating them. (Andy won in 2009)  The Schlecks are also back this year.  Riders expected to join last year's podium on the start line include: two-time winner Valverde (2006, 2008), Milan-San Remo winner Gerrans, Amstel winner Gasparotto, Fleche winner RodriguezVanendert, Van Avermaet, Van Garderen, Horner, Voigt, Chavanel, Brammeier, Pineau, Freire, Nibali, Albasini, Sanchez S., Devolder, Westra, Gesink, Boom, Sanchez L.L., Voeckler, Rolland, Cunego, Scarponi, Hesjedal, Dekker, Martin, Wegmann, Fedrigo, Casar, Van Den Broeck, Sorensen.

- Sunday's Liege-Bastogne-Liege departs Liege at 10:25am CET (4:25am U.S. Eastern) and is expected at the finish at Ans at around 5:06pm CET (11:06am U.S. Eastern).  Liege-Bastogne-Liege live streaming video should get underway at around 2:15pm CET (8:15am U.S. Eastern). *RTL is scheduled to start at 2:05pm but is geo-restricted.  Most feeds are expected to start around 2:15pm with others starting a bit later.

- For the EIGHTH consecutive year, you can follow Liege-Bastogne-Liege live on cyclingfans.com.

In 1980, Bernard Hinault (Renault) rode to an epic Liège-Bastogne-Liège victory in the snow.  It was already snowing at the start and according to rider Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle, some riders picked up their rider numbers and promptly went home.  At kilometer 45, Hinault, who had just one teammate left in the race (!), seemed ready to abandon as well when his directeur sportif Cyrille Guimard told him a climb was approaching and the effort would allow him to warm up!  At kilometer 70, 110 riders of 174 had already abandoned.  Only 21 riders made it to the finish.  How bad was it?  Duclos-Lassalle (11th) told L'Equipe in 2010 that he doesn't even remember finishing.  Hinault told L'Equipe that he has never fully regained sensation in two fingers.  Many of the abandoned riders were staying warm at the Ramada 200 meters from the finish line when Hinault rode by.  Hinault, who knew they were there watching behind the windows, saluted them from his bike "like a general reviewing his troops."  (L'Equipe)

The L'Equipe photo pictured above is one of the all-time great photos in pro cycling history.  I found it on display on the L'Equipe stand at a book fair in Paris in February, 2006 as L'Equipe celebrated its 60 year anniversary.
