That leaves Flanders winner Tom Boonen of Omega Pharma-Quickstep as the big favorite for Paris-Roubaix. He has already won this race three times. If Boonen is in a lead group into the Roubaix Velodrome, who can beat him in a sprint? Flanders runner-up, Filippo Pozzato (Farnese Vini) is also back to form this season and it is great to see. Johan Vansummeren (Garmin-Barracuda) is the defending champion. BMC Racing brings a team loaded with Roubaix veterans including Alessandro Ballan, Thor Hushovd (photo above), and George Hincapie, all three of whom have finished on the podium at Roubaix. Hushovd perhaps seems destined to win this race with two recent podium finishes, in 2009 (third) and 2010 (second). If Boonen is eliminated, Hushovd perhaps becomes the favorite in a lead group. BMC also bring Taylor Phinney who will be racing Paris-Roubaix as an elite rider for the first time (Phinney won the U23 Paris-Roubaix twice). Juan Antonio Flecha (Sky Procycling), who dreamed of cobbles as a boy (see photo/text above), has had fantastic results at Roubaix, finishing 3rd in 2005 (behind Boonen and Hincapie), 4th in 2006, 2nd in 2007, 6th in 2009 and 3rd in 2010. That's 3 podium finishes for Flecha who can never be happy to see a Boonen or other sprinter in a lead group with him. Other contenders, including Sep Vanmarcke and Matti Breschel, can take hope in the fact that there have been unexpected winners in recent years including Vansummeren and Stuart O'Grady. Anything can happen in this race, which makes it all the more exciting. These guys are all pros but road racing is first and foremost a human endeavor; they are warriors on bikes. Respect. -Pete - Sunday's Paris-Roubaix departs Compiegne at 10:10am CET (4:10am U.S. Eastern) and is expected at the finish at Roubaix at around 4:46pm CET (10:46am U.S. Eastern).
