Vuelta a España: Quick glance at the
top 10
Roberto Heras
Liberty Seguros-Wurth
Race leader Heras is 4:36 ahead of Denis Menchov
and is set to win a record 4th Vuelta today.
|
Denis Menchov
Rabobank
Menchov had a great Vuelta with two stage wins,
many days in the gold jersey and a likely second place on the final podium.
|
Carlos Sastre
Team CSC
Sastre is in third place, just 18 seconds behind Menchov.
|
Francisco Mancebo
Illes Balears-Caisse d'Epargne
Mancebo is in 4th place 1:04 behind Carlos Sastre. He failed
in his bid to reach the podium but he had a solid race and helped keep
things interesting.

Carlos Garcia Quesada

|
Ruben Plaza Molina
(Comunidad Valenciana)
With his win in yesterday's time trial, Ruben Plaza
moved up to 6th in the overall standings.
|
A quiet but solid race for Oscar Sevilla, in 7th place.
|
Tom Danielson
(Discovery Channel)
A 9th place finish in the final time trial was enough
to move Danielson up to 8th overall in his first full Grand Tour. A
solid performance that suggests better things are surely to come for the
27 year-old Coloradoan getting a relatively late start racing in Europe.

Notes:
Ruben Plaza Molina
(Comunitat Valenciana)
Exciting finish in yesterday's final individual
time trial as overall race leader Roberto Heras, departing last in the
gold jersey, narrowly missed victory (by less than 6 tenths of a second!)
in the stage won by Ruben Plaza. The top four riders in the overall
classification (Heras, Menchov, Sastre, Mancebo) all turned in solid performances
in the time trial, though not necessarily in the expected order as Menchov
finished fourth behind Plaza, Heras and Sastre, with Mancebo fifth.
Barring major disaster on the road, Heras will ride to the finish
line in Madrid today as the first-ever 4-time winner of the Vuelta.

Nicki Sorensen (Team CSC)
Nicki Sorensen of Denmark got the biggest win
of his career yesterday, outsprinting breakaway companion Javier Pascual
Rodriguez to the line in the final mountain stage of the 2005 Vuelta.
There was no change in the overall standings for the top 3 (Heras,
Menchov, Sastre) and Francisco Mancebo, currently in 4th, gained just
3 seconds in his bid for the podium.

Paolo Bettini (Quick Step)
Hard to believe that it took until the 2005 season for Italian
Paolo "The Cricket" Bettini to get his first-ever stage wins in the
Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España. Bettini now has
stage wins in all three Grand Tours. (He won stage 9 of the 2000
Tour de France.) The former World Cup champion beat compatriot
Alessandro Petacchi to the line in yesterday's stage 16.
Roberto Heras still leads Denis Menchov by 4:30 in the overall
standings. Carlos Sastre of CSC is in third at 4:50.

Notes:
Manolo Saiz
Manager, Liberty Seguros-Würth
Brilliant strategy, teamwork and racing in Sunday's stage
15 as the strong Liberty Seguros team succeeded in grabbing the race
lead from Rabobank and previous race leader Denis Menchov. An
injured Roberto Heras fed off the hard work and aggressive riding by
teammates such as Angel Vicioso, Joseba Beloki, Giampaolo Caruso and
Michele Scarponi and finally went off on his own to a stunning stage win
that left Menchov 4:30 back in second place in the overall. Heras
is now poised to win a record 4th Vuelta.
