Below is our Guide
to Live Coverage of the Vuelta a Espana
Landis and the Tour de France
(cyclingfans.com) - Is Floyd Landis innocent?
I'll say yes...
Okay, bad joke. (Last year, when a journalist asked Landis
if he had ever used performance-enhancing drugs, he responded "I'll say
no.")
Floyd Landis asked us all to be patient while he set out to
prove his innocence. Patient we were but now the verdict is in:
Floyd Landis doped on his way to winning the 2006 Tour
de France. Floyd may or may not appeal the decision but
we have a positive finding that has been upheld.
The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has already moved
to name runner-up, Oscar Pereiro, the 2006 Tour champion.
Floyd Landis will be erased from the history books, the only time
in history a Tour winner has actually been stripped of his title for
a failed drug test.
Not everyone is happy with the idea of completely erasing
Landis from the history books.
Cycling great Eddy Merckx said last year that should
Landis be found guilty he should remain as winner but with an asterisk
attached to his name.
Philippe Brunel, a veteran cycling journalist for
L'Equipe, the French sports daily, when asked last year on
L'Equipe TV who should be declared the winner of the 2006 Tour, showed
little faith in Oscar Pereiro by responding "Floyd Pereiro."
Merckx and Brunel of course know about cycling's long history
of doping.
Officials at Tour organizer Amaury Sport Organization (A.S.O.)
always have a public and a private position on such subjects.
The public position of course is that they knew all along
that Landis was guilty and that he should indeed be removed from the
record books. The private position? "It was a beautiful
race, Landis showed panache, what a shame he got caught."
Landis faces serving the time remaining on his two-year ban,
and there can be no other way short of an unexpected successful appeal
to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. You dope, you get caught,
you serve your sentence.
Who knows how long an appeal would take anyway and there is
of course the expense. I'm betting Floyd will forgo an appeal
and take care of his family while he considers a comeback.
As to what the record books should show, whether one agrees
with Merckx, with Brunel, with one of ASO's positions, or some other
position, is up to each of us to decide.
