2008 Tour de France: Kurt-Asle Arvesen, Andy Schleck and Carlos Sastre climb ahead of CSC team and race leader Frank Schleck during Stage 16
2008 Tour de France:  Kurt-Asle Arvesen, Andy Schleck and Carlos Sastre climb ahead of
CSC team and race leader Frank Schleck during yesterday's Stage 16.  Frank Schleck retained
the yellow jersey but will look to gain time on rivals such as Cadel Evans in today's
huge stage to Alpe d'Huez, where he won in 2006.  Bernhard Kohl is second overall
at 7 seconds, Evans third at 8 seconds.  CSC also have the Sastre card to play
as Sastre is currently in fourth place at 49 seconds.  CSC know they will be out-classed
in the final time trial so might be expected to attempt a one-two attack punch today
with Sastre first, then Schleck.  What tactics will the other teams use?  Should be a great stage.

Now available in English!  I read the French edition of Jean-Paul Vespini's "The Tour is Won on the Alpe" several years ago.  It was superb and the just-published English 2008 edition brings the history of Alpe d'Huez to a much larger audience.  Merckx, Hinault, Indurain, Pantani, LeMond, Hampsten, Armstrong, and their exploits on the Alpe, are all here.  This edition is updated through 2006, so it includes the story of Armstrong's win in the first-ever time trial up the Alpe in 2004 as well as Frank Schleck's victory there in 2006.  (The Tour didn't visit Alpe d'Huez in 2007.)  (Due to death threats, Armstrong in 2004 was preceded up the climb by a secret service agent on the back of a police motorcycle.)  An Appendix lists all the winners on l'Alpe since Fausto Coppi in 1952, the first year the mountain was climbed.  A second appendix lists some interesting statistics related to this climb.

From the back cover:  "In the Tour is Won on the Alpe, veteran journalist Jean-Paul Vespini brings the excitement, the magic, the madness, and the glory of the Alpe--as well as the Tour itself--to magnificent life."

There are 25 chapters telling the stories of the greatest battles on Alpe d'Huez, including the stage in 1986 where teammates Bernard Hinault and Greg LeMond won together and the stage in 1989 when Frenchman Laurent Fignon took the yellow jersey from ultimate victor LeMond.  Here's an extract:   '"Suddenly," wrote Philippe Bouvet in L'Equipe, "LeMond sat back down in the saddle.  He reached for his shift lever.  He wavered.  The narrow corridor that the fans had yielded was not wide enough; LeMond was all over the place.  For 500 meters, it was terrible:  The yellow jersey was drowning in the sea of spectators.  No car or motorcycle could follow him closely enough to keep the crowd from closing in on him."'

This is a must read for anyone passionate about the Tour de France and Alpe d'Huez.  A great book to take on summer vacation!  The Appendices and chapter notes make it a great reference as well.  Includes both black and white and color photos.  The French edition and now the English edition are part of my permanent collection of cycling books.

- RAI Tre is now streaming the Tour live.

- Does winning a stage to Alpe d'Huez lead to overall victory in the Tour de France?  Very rarely.  In fact, only Fausto Coppi (1952) and Lance Armstrong (2001, 2004) have won a stage to Alpe d'Huez and the Tour in the same year.

The important statistic is how often the man in yellow after a stage to Alpe d'Huez goes on to win the overall.  The number is stunning:   There have been 25 stages to Alpe d'Huez in Tour history (including two in 1979!) and the man in yellow after the stage has gone on to win the overall 19 times.  (source:  "The Tour is Won on the Alpe".  More info above.)
