Notes:
- Tomorrow is the first big Individual Time Trial (54km) of the 2007
Tour de France. We'll start to get a better idea of who will be the
main contenders for overall victory heading into the final week of the
race.

- The main NOS stream is bogged down due to heavy demand. Richard
L. in the U.K. says the secondary NOS feed is fine. (Thanks, Richard.)
Anyone wanting to combine a video stream with the English or French
live audio stream, see our notes from yesterday.
- What's the fastest way to see photos from today's stage of the Tour
de France? Click on "Yahoo photo gallery" in our Live Guide. AP
and AFP photographers often send in photos immediately after the stage start
as well as from the road mid-stage.
- Both NOS live video streams are playing today's stage of the Tour
de France, as is the Tiny Eurosport live video stream and the Eurosport
U.K. and France live audio streams.
- Today's stage gets underway at 12:40 CET (6:40am U.S.
Eastern). The NOS (Netherlands) live coverage is scheduled to
begin at 12:55 CET (6:55am U.S. Eastern).

Rebecca is overseas with the opera but continues to send entries

- The NOS stream, alternative NOS stream and
tiny Eurosport live video stream are all playing today's stage of the
Tour de France.
- The Eurosport English and French language streams are working.
In response to a reader question, we are unaware of any lower
bandwidth live audio streams at this time.
- Regarding combining Eurosport UK live audio with a separate
video feed:
What works for us requires using both Real Player and
Windows Media Player. Open Real Player, select
File/Open, then paste the address for the Eurosport (English) live feed
and open it. Then click on one of the live video feeds in our Live
Guide. You can mute the sound in your Windows Media Player. If
you don't have Real Player, you can get a free version
here.
- Today's stage gets underway at 12:45 CET (6:45am U.S.
Eastern). The NOS (Netherlands) live coverage is scheduled to
begin at 12:30 CET (6:30am U.S. Eastern).

Today's stage from Marseille to Montpellier is another transition
stage from the Alps to the Pyrenees. The profile is pancake flat,
with only 1 category 4 climb coming in the beginning of the stage. It
is perfectly conducive to a bunch sprint. All of that depends on,
however, if the sprinters' teams have the energy to chase down the day's
breakaway.

- The main NOS stream is working today but
is bogged down by heavy demand. The "alternative stream" is working
much better.
- The Serbian TV video stream is scheduled
to begin in a couple of minutes, at 16:25 CET (10:25am U.S. Eastern).
The alternative NOS stream remains your best bet at this time,
however.
- The Eurosport UK and France live audio
streams are working. The Tiny Eurosport live video stream
is working as well.
- Several of you have mentioned peer-to-peer (P2P) solutions
for watching the Tour. We have not yet been able to test these
and are not supporting such solutions at this time. Thanks for letting
us know about them.
- Some of you have asked about the NOS feed.
The main NOS feed is not working for us at this time (demand
too heavy?) but the "alternative stream" is working.
- Today's stage gets underway at 12:00
CET (6:00am U.S. Eastern). The NOS (Netherlands) live coverage
is scheduled to begin at 12:00 CET (6:00am U.S. Eastern).

Stage 9: Val-d’Isère - Briançon,
159.5km
Over the Col du Galibier
by Pete Geyer
This stage isn't considered as difficult as the mountain
stages in the Pyrenees but because the riders make the race, anything
can happen.
Iban Mayo's greatest Tour moment came on a stage over the
Col du Galibier on the way to victory at Alpe d'Huez in 2003. Though
the Tour doesn't visit Alpe d'Huez this year, Mayo will also remember
the stage in the 2003 Dauphiné Libéré when he
attacked Lance Armstrong on the Galibier on the way to Briançon,
the same finish town of today's stage.
Alexandre Vinokourov will remember his stage victory over
the Télégraphe/Galibier combo to Briançon in
the 2005 Tour. Like in 2005, he finds himself with some time
to make up. But how much has he recovered from his injuries? And
if he feels good, is he patient enough to wait until later in the race?
Frenchman Christophe Moreau knows the Galibier well and
has looked very strong this year. If he attacks, will he find
some help? If he doesn't attack, will he still have good form
late in the race?
Race leader Michael Rasmussen, facing nearly 110km in two
time trials later in the race, knows he needs to gain more time
in the mountains. He's not accustomed to having to defend yellow
and depending on who attacks on the Galibier, Rasmussen could be put
under serious pressure. It all depends on what the riders want to
do as sometimes a rather large group of leaders makes it to the top of
the Galibier together.
Levi Leipheimer has said all along he aimed to peak later
in the race, in the Pyrenees. Teammate Alberto Contador has
some good form now. Will Discovery Channel send him up the road
again?
Because there is a descent of 37.5km from the Galibier summit
to the finish in Briançon, the only useful attacks will need
to come early on the Galibier or even earlier in the stage. Attack
too late on the Galibier and you may find yourself caught on the descent.
This stage could be difficult to control for Rabobank and
will be interesting to follow after the rest day. Nothing much
could happen among the leaders or there could be pandemonium as some
of the climbers decide to try something from far out. The days
of the USPS/Discovery Channel mountain trains are over, so again anything
can happen.
One thing is sure; the view from the Galibier is spectacular!

Sarah on
Crashes in the Tour:
Crashes test even the toughest of fans, just as they test
the riders. We must sit, helpless, as riders we love bleed as they
cross the finish-line. We all remember the blood dripping down
Thor Hushovd's arm during last year's Tour, just as we'll remember Mick
Rogers hunched over his bike in tears as he abandoned during this year's
Tour. What's different this year, at least to me, is that there are
so many crashes and that they are bad.
The question is why. Is it because there's no one controlling
the race like the USPS team of old (and this question has been batted
around since Armstrong retired)? Is it because the route is tougher?
Because the cyclists are riding faster? Or does it have to do with
the bikes themselves or the fact that riders are taking more chances
than in the past? We might never know, but we suffer through, just as
they do. This is a part of cycling and as much as it broke my heart to
watch Rogers abandon, the race goes on.
