7. All About Alberto
(click to open)
- Regarding combining Eurosport UK live audio with a separate
video feed:
What works for us requires using both Real Player and Windows
Media Player. Open Real Player, select File/Open, then paste the
address for the Eurosport (English) live feed and open it. Then click
on one of the live video feeds in our Live Guide. You can mute the
sound in your Windows Media Player. If you don't have Real Player,
you can get a free version
here.
- LIVE Eurosport in ENGLISH audio flash:
It's
here
(Thanks, Jim C!)
Finally, the race...with Sean Kelly commentating.
- If you haven't already discovered it, here is a
direct link
to the Eurosport live GPS tracking. (Thanks,
Mike) Hopefully they will fix the live audio issues very soon.
Congratulations to our own Mike Kunnecke for a fine showing in his Time
Trial yesterday.
- The Eurosport France audio link has been updated (it changes
every day). The feed (non-Yahoo) is working. Jacky Durand
is one of the best color commentators in the world. You just need
to be able to understand French!
- Very heavy access today. If you can't get the NOS stream, try
again. We just checked and were able to view both the NOS stream and
the Tiny Eurosport (no audio) stream.
Regarding race audio in English, all we can suggest at the moment is for
you to scroll down to our July 11 entry and try one of the two solutions
there for starting Eurosport U.K. audio, as the usual links do not work. Bernie
says he could tune in to UK audio on Friday but there were problems, perhaps
in part due to heavy demand? Apparently there are problems with the
new Eurosport/Yahoo site.
- Oops! We bonked and posted
the wrong file to the Alberto Contador Notebook. Sorry about that.
The correct file has been posted. If you already opened Page
7, you'll want to open it again. Things will make more sense...and later
in the race, you can win a copy of Dancing on the Pedals: The Found Poetry
of Phil Liggett!
Image A.S.O.
- Today's big stage to Tignes gets underway
at 12:45 CET (6:45am U.S. Eastern). Coverage on NOS is scheduled to
begin at 12:38 CET (6:38am U.S. Eastern).
Chris: "Young
Gun Gerdemann Comes of Age" Stage 7 Report
here
Today's stage 8 continues in the Alps and is sure to be much more selective
than yesterday's stage. With three Category 1 climbs in the final 64km,
it should really sort out who the main contenders are for the GC. With
a rest day coming up tomorrow, the riders will not be holding anything back
today as they race up to Tignes. The "real" Tour de France begins now.

6. Now and Later "My time will come"
(click to open)
- Good morning, Jean-François, ça
va?
- We're looking into the Eurosport live audio problems. People
are reporting no live U.K. audio for a couple of days. The only one
that works for us at this time is the Eurosport France stream (we
have updated the link) with Richard Virenque and Jacky Durand
doing color commentary. There is also some live radio coverage
during the French radio broadcasts on France Inter and RMC
(Radio Monte-Carlo).
The Eurosport France homepage and audio stream have nothing to do with
Yahoo which recently started a collaboration with the other Eurosport country
sites. So is it an issue at Yahoo? Eurosport has indeed reported
having some problems updating their site since the merge with Yahoo. If
anyone is getting Eurosport UK audio, please let us know. Thanks.
- We believe the NOS Tour de France live
stream may start as early as 12:55 CET (6:55am U.S. Eastern).
- This weekend, the Serbian TV stream only shows delayed, evening broadcasts
of the Tour de France.
Chris: "Boonen
Back on Top" Stage 6 Report
here
Today's Stage 7 heads into the Alps for the first serious test of the
GC riders. The main feature is the 1st category climb Col de la Colombiere,
which ends 15km from the finish line. At 16km at 6%, it should provide
a stiff test to anyone with serious podium ambitions in Paris. Look
for a select group to arrive in Le Grand Bornand to battle out the stage
victory.

Below is our Guide
to Live Coverage of the 2007 Tour de France
Predictions: Who said Alberto can win
the Tour?
(click graphic to open Contador Notebook)
The Alberto Contador Tour de France Notebook is back. Though
Rebecca submits her prose like clockwork, we got behind in our posting. Sorry
about that.
Click the graphic above to pick up where we left off and see who is predicting
Alberto can win the Tour! On page 3 is Alberto's impressive palmarès.
On page 4, read about a typical day for Alberto, what he eats for breakfast,
how he spends his afternoons, etc. On page 5, read about Discovery
Channel's and Alberto's mountain recon. Christine Kahane submitted
a couple of photos from the Tour and also translated some texts from Spanish.
Thanks, Christine!

Versus live video streaming update
We have some information on what's up with
the Versus live video streaming, direct from Versus lawyer, Carla. Carla
says that Versus is not permitted to publicly stream the Tour de France.
(Though she didn't elaborate, presumably that means they didn't
purchase online broadcast rights; television and internet rights tend
to be sold separately. Note that in some European markets, internet
rights to the Tour de France have been sold and in other markets they remain
unsold.) So the scenario whereby Amaury Sport Organization (A.S.O.),
who appear in our site logs since Monday (hi Jean-François!), put
pressure on Versus seems likely.
In other words, the stream is not meant for public consumption and Versus
was getting heat for it being out there. Carla says that they believe
they have corrected the "problem" by blocking access to the stream. (Why
didn't they do that in the first place?)
This raises the question of what that brief, announced live streaming
on the Versus site last weekend was all about. Did someone in the
Versus internet department simply screw up? Was it a deliberate publicity
stunt early in the Tour to get more viewers for the TV broadcasts?
Carla has again asked the Versus internet department to contact us, though
the main questions are all answered now: there is no stream for public
consumption and there will be no stream for public consumption, free or otherwise.
The news is not good but thanks for the responses, Carla.
So Versus had a contractual obligation to prevent public access to the
stream. They failed to do that ahead of time. Carla added that
"any diversion of viewers to the Internet or elsewhere that
detracts from potential viewership of the television coverage affects advertising
support and impairs our ability to cover events of this nature." But
clearly Versus simply do not believe in streaming the race over the internet
themselves either.
Many people have written to us saying that they watched the commercials
during those few days when the live video streaming was out there. It
would be interesting to hear directly from the sponsors on this...
Maybe we should block A.S.O. from accessing our site... ;-)

Watching the Tour de France wherever
you go
Live video streaming delivered anywhere
by Pete Geyer
Thursday, July 12, 2007
I'm going to tell you about a cool product. Some of you may have
heard about it. Some of you may even already have one of these boxes.
Some of you, and I'm thinking in particular of the employee of the
Amaury Group (owner of L'Equipe and Amaury Sport Organization (A.S.O.),
organizer of the Tour de France) who has appeared numerous times in the cyclingfans.com
site logs since Monday and who may have played a role in pressuring Versus
into demanding that we not link to the Versus live video feed of the Tour
de France, may be afraid of this product. (Bonjour, Jean-François,
hope you enjoy your visit to the site today.)
A.S.O., who according to Daniel Baal in his book "Tour de France:
Rêves et Réalités" ("Dreams and Realities", 2004)
was so resistant to using technology at its headquarters just outside
Paris that even PowerPoint wasn't an option, must be absolutely terrified
of this product and the technology. Baal was Director of Cycling
at A.S.O. and was to replace Jean-Marie Leblanc as director of the Tour.
He gave up trying to change the organization and left in early 2004,
with A.S.O. having decided that a non-journalist (Baal was a banker by trade)
could not run cycling's biggest race.
I've been thinking about this product, and the technology, a lot
lately, trying to decide how it might fit in to what we do at cyclingfans.com.
"Time-shifting" products like VCRs and Tivo allow you to watch programs
whenever you want. "Place-shifting" products allow you to watch programs
WHEREVER you want. (I tried a 3G mobile bandwidth card with my laptop
on Mont Ventoux at the 2006 Dauphiné Libéré - no
go, no signal up there so I couldn't connect to the internet.)
The Slingbox Tuner by Sling Media streams your television signal
to your computer anywhere in the world (You can purchase below.)
Sling Media's Slingbox Tuner is an example of a "place-shifting"
device. It redirects your home television signal to your computer
anywhere in the world - at work or on the road while traveling. Have
Versus Tour de France coverage at home? Watch it at the office, or
anywhere in the world.
It's not difficult to see how such a technology could wreak havoc
with ASO's (and Versus') attempts to control how people watch which broadcasts,
and where. Imagine an exchange program by which a Frenchman interested
in watching U.S. broadcasts of NBA games hooks up with an American interested
in watching more cycling. The Frenchman could hook up a box to
his TV's signal and send live cycling to his new American friend and the
latter could do the same for NBA games. Because the internet makes
it so easy for sports fans worldwide to communicate, this prospect could
be ASO's worst nightmare. It is difficult to see how ASO could do
anything to stop it. But if ASO followed the lead of the organizers
of the Giro d'Italia and at least offered low bandwidth streams for free
on their website, surely that would go a long way toward undermining any
illicit activity involving ASO content. Alas, Versus has long seemed
so afraid of offering at least some limited live streaming themselves that
perhaps PowerPoint-phobic ASO is happy not to stream from their site. It
remains to be seen if recent streaming tests by Versus amount to much for
cycling-hungry fans.
When Versus demanded on Tuesday that we remove a link to its live
video stream of the Tour de France under threat of legal action, I complied
immediately. Though we were not streaming anyone's content and never
have, or would, I was not about to take the risk that Versus would try to
make things difficult for us because we linked to content that apparently
no one is supposed to know about. I did reply, however, that we have
long promoted their product for free, just as we have promoted ASO's events
year-round from Paris-Nice to Paris-Tours, including, among other races,
the Critérium International, Tour de Picardie, Tour de l'Avenir and
defunct Grand Prix des Nations. In fact, at one time or another we
have promoted everyone who organizes races and everyone who provides some
form of live coverage. (I have also photographed all of ASO's various
cycling events in Europe and supplied those photos to others. In some
cases, my photos of ASO's smaller races were the only photos posted on cycling's
top news websites.) Many people out there recognize our role in promoting
cycling worldwide and have sent us emails to thank us.
The response of Versus is to threaten legal action. However
much Versus may have been under pressure from ASO (and the contract does
give Versus obligations in addition to rights), they could be handling this
differently. After removing the link to their live streaming, I
asked them for some information about the streaming, if it was available
in some legitimate form, whether free or for pay, and was promised some
answers. I'm still waiting. And I know many of you are upset.
"Place-shifting" solutions like the Slingbox Tuner of course do require
that you have a television signal with cycling coverage to connect to.
If you have that, then you can have that signal streamed to your
computer anywhere in the world.
There are numerous websites that post links to anything and everything
in terms of live video streaming in every sport, much of it illicit. Virtually
none of them go so far as to provide added-value to video streams, something
we have done here for nearly three years.
ASO and Versus are never going to be able to contain this beast that
is live streaming. They might want to consider fully embracing the
technology instead of going out of their way to alienate the fans.
So, while we wait for answers from Versus that may never arrive, how
about that Slingbox Tuner folks. It's in stock at Amazon.com and
you can purchase it right here:
Do I hear the footsteps of Jean-François running to warn his
boss at ASO?
Notes:
- Jon says: "I watched the versus stream, including
the ads. We were in the market for a new washing machine and I saw
an ad for either Home Depot or Lowes and we did end up dropping $1000 for
a new washing machine yesterday (bought from home depot). I guess they
don't want our money????"
Jon, do you work for Home Depot? Just kidding. Everyone,
please consider taking your next vacation in The Netherlands or Serbia.
- Anyone want to watch the Tour on their wristwatch?
This tiny Eurosport
video feed
(no audio) may be just the ticket. (Thanks, Bernie,
future Nobel laureate.)
- Thanks for all the great emails. Some
of you people should go work in the Versus marketing department. We
of course agree that their argument that online streaming would hurt their
core business surely doesn't hold water. Their current contract runs
out next year. The fact that they still don't purchase internet rights
may be an indication of what their future plans are, or lack thereof, for
Tour coverage.
- Regarding Eurosport live audio, if
you scroll down to July 11, we have a couple of solutions which may work
for you. Keep in mind though that the audio streams may be overwhelmed
with demand so you may have to try a few times. We've been neglecting
the audio with all the video issues going on this week but will try to give
audio a look now.
- NOS is now streaming live video of today's stage of the
Tour de France.
Chris: "Astana
in Trouble" Stage 5 Report
here
Today's stage returns to the flatlands with only two 4th category climbs
and a deadflat finish. It should be another bunch sprint. Erik Zabel
(Milram), because of his 5th place finish yesterday, now wears the green
jersey after Tom Boonen got dropped yesterday. This is the last stage
before the serious mountains start, offering the sprinters one last day of
glory before the roads head uphill.

- Yes, we know the Versus stream is still working. We've never said
otherwise, in fact we've said repeatedly it is still working. But that
is not the point. Versus is threatening legal action to the tune
of $150,000 per infraction for those websites that post the link. We
decided not to be a test case.

Chris: "Hushovd
Gets 1st Win of the Year" Stage 4 Report
here.
Today's stage continues the journey south in the direction of the
Alps. The profile is a bit hillier than previous stages, with the
most severe climb being the category 2 Haut-Folin that comes 45km from
the finish. But the really interesting climb is the category 3 Cote
de la Croix de la Liberation that comes only 8km from the finish.
3.4km long at an average gradient of 5.4%, it has the potential to soften
up the sprinters and allow for another rider to claim glory. The
other storyline to follow is whether or not Fabian Cancellara has the climbing
legs to stay with the peloton and hold onto the maillot jaune for another
day.

Pass this along...I'm a Mac user. Went to the Eurosport live text
update page, and one of the entries has a link to the audio:
http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/embedvideo.html?p=index#
Even though this is a video link, it's audio only. Click the "live
audio" button, then click on the arrow at the bottom right of the window
and it will expand to the video window. You have to wait until a commercial
runs, and then it will come up. It takes about 10 seconds to pull up.
I have only been successful using the Safari browser (Firefox
and Netscape won't work.)
Good luck -
- Eurosport live audio stream (U.K.):
Still having problems with the usual audio links (aside from French
feed which works) but the following works for us:
1. Go to the
Eurosport home page
2. In Related Video section of that page (righthand side),
Click on Tour de France - Stage Four LIVE
This displays a dynamic Michelin map. The great Sean
Kelly is the color commentator.
- Regarding whether one can pay for the Versus stream:
A number of you have asked this question and it is indeed one
of the questions we sent to Versus. Are they testing the market?
Do they need to get geo-blocking in place so that only viewers in
the U.S. and Canada can view? We hope to have answers as soon as
possible.
- Some readers with audio stream problems in the past have found
that re-booting their computers fixed things.
- Regarding Eurosport audio streams: The only one
working for us at this time is the French stream. Several people
have reported problems today with the U.K. stream. Too much demand?
A technical problem at Yahoo/Eurosport? We don't know at this
time.
- For those of you joining in today and wondering what the Versus
stream issue is all about: We had a link posted until yesterday
but had to remove it. Just checked (about 9am U.S. Eastern) and
as we noted earlier the stream IS still running. Unfortunately we
cannot post it and we cannot give it to you via email. Thanks for
your patience as we await information from Versus about all of this.
- The Serbian TV stream, as indicated, is scheduled to begin at
16:25 CET. Alternatives we may find in the days ahead will be
posted.
- Versus live video streaming: Questions regarding
the live stream have been sent to the Versus internet department.
Many of you had the same questions, notably since the stream
exists (and is still running as of this morning), under what conditions,
if any, is it available for public consumption? We have been told
we should receive a response shortly. We will post an update on
this matter either later today or tomorrow, Thursday.
- Some of you have sent in links to alternative streams. We
haven't posted many of the country-specific streams but we will check
these and others out today. Thanks for your numerous emails!
Chris: "Cancellara
Steals the Show" Stage 3 Report
here.
Today's stage is a bit hillier with 4 category 4 climbs, though
is otherwise flat. The sprinters teams will no doubt be certain
to make sure that they don't make the same mistake as they did yesterday
and control any breakaway. Thus, another bunch sprint appears likely.
