Women's Tour de France, June 17-22
(La Grande Boucle Feminine Internationale) 2008 La Grande Boucle Feminine Internationale (GBFI)
This year's edition of the GBFI or women's Tour de France started
on Tuesday in Gent and finishes Sunday, June 22 in Sestriere. With limited
media exposure, the GBFI has fallen on hard times in recent years. Organizers
opted for exposure of a different kind in 2002 when they made Paris Lido topless dancer Cynthia Compain the event's "godmother" and put her on the start line. Compain was actually a serious cyclist riding for the C.A Mantes la ville 78
team and did finish the race, albeit in last place. I photographed
the final stage time trial in Paris that year and was struck by the number
of motorcycles accompanying Compain. It was a big story. Not everyone in
the women's peloton appreciated what they understandably saw as a media stunt
(some of them were asked to join Compain in promotional photo appearances
at the Lido) and Compain subsequently made news again when she appeared in
Playboy.
Did the rider by day, dancer by night angle work? Well, the race was almost canceled the following year (2003) and then was not held in 2004.
Today the race is significantly downsized compared to the glory years.
Such is life at the women's Tour de France, obviously not in a good financial situation. A.S.O., organizer of the official, trademarked July circus by that name isn't jumping to lend a hand.
Nicole Cooke of Great Britain is two-time defending champion this year. Other riders on the start list include Lithuanian twins Rasa and Jolanta Polikeviciute, 1999 winner Diana Ziliute and Swiss star Karin Thürig.
Other past winners (but not competing this year) include the event's first winner, American Marianne Martin (1984) when the race was known as Le Tour de France Feminin (women's Tour de France), the great Jeannie Longo (1987, 1988, 1989), two-time winner Leontien Van Moorsel, three-time winner Fabiana Luperini and three-time winner Joane Somarriba.
Sport+ in France has delayed TV coverage.
Related books:
This large format, hardcover book (2002 by Pierre Boue) is the definitive
history of the GBFI. (Not covered in detail are the years prior to 1992
when there was a race known as Le Tour de France Feminin.) Longo, Van Moorsel, Polkhanova, Luperini, Pucinskaite, Ziliute, Somarriba and Stahurskaya
are all here in their own chapters. Lots of great, rarely seen race photos.
On a negative note, the binding is a bit questionable. For more info or
to order the book, click on the above image. For a sample chapter (with photos), click
here (.pdf).
Pro road racing is a very tough, and dangerous, sport for the women too and
they compete with relatively few spectators to cheer them on. And how about
the return of Russian Valentina Polkhanova, winner in 1994, to the pro peloton
after becoming a mother? It was big news in 1999 and she, er, delivered
a stunning performance, finishing second overall in the women's Tour de France.
Allez les filles!

We got a call first thing this morning from wcsn.com with the news: Months in the works, a deal involving an NBC Sports majority interest in the World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) is now official.
Universal Sports will combine NBC Universal's programming and production expertise and promotional power with WCSN’s leading online destination for Olympic sports
plus its growing television network to create the preeminent multiplatform
destination for Olympic sports programming. The announcement was made
today by Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Universal Sports & Olympics and
Leo Hindery, Jr., Managing Partner of InterMedia Partners, the controlling
shareholder of WCSN. Universal Sports will include both a television
network and a robust online platform UniversalSports.com. “Universal
Sports will provide a terrific year-round home to almost all Olympic sports
and the athletes who give our viewers such compelling stories,” said Ebersol.
Our primary interest here of course is with television and online broadcasting of cycling events
and we are working closely with WCSN in this area. Cycling is of course
an Olympic sport and WCSN have promised to be more aggressive on this front.
Their schedule this year has already included the UCI Track Worlds and the Tour de Georgia, among other races, with the Tour of Germany, Tour of Missouri and WCSN USA Crits Championships in Las Vegas
yet to come this season. We wish WCSN and Universal Sports the best
of luck in their new venture and in helping to grow the market for cycling!
You'll find more info about Universal Sports here.
