Discovery Channel to race
inaugural Tour of Missouri

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch is reporting today that the Discovery Channel Pro Cycling team is the first team to sign on to compete in the inaugural Tour of Missouri which starts September 11 in Kansas City and ends September 16 in St. Louis.

Briefly:

Phil Liggett
Versus Channel cycling commentator Phil Liggett has begun his Tour de France journal, speculating on the Tour prologue in London as well as favorites for the overall.

- Versus recently posted its 2007 Tour de France TV Schedule

- David Walsh is at it again.

From Lance to Landis by David Walsh

- Just in time for the Tour de France, Irish writer David Walsh has yet another book about Lance Armstrong.  Titled "From Lance to Landis: Inside the American Doping Controversy at the Tour de France," the book hits store shelves today.

Even as the sport of cycling has been turned upside down over the Operation Puerto scandal in Spain, Walsh continues to track Armstrong.  The speculation is that this is mostly re-hashed material from Walsh's two earlier books, both released only in French in collaboration with former L'Equipe journalist, Pierre Ballester.  We'll get a copy of "From Lance to Landis" and post our take on it.

Walsh has now surpassed Armstrong in number of books written about the champion.

We're keeping score:

Books about Lance Armstrong:

Lance Armstrong: 2
David Walsh: 3

Tour de France victories:

Lance Armstrong: 7
David Walsh: 0

- Floyd Landis also has a book, the recently released "Positively False: The Real Story of How I Won the Tour de France."

Tour de France partners with YouTube

As part of a major overhaul of its website, Tour de France organizers have announced a deal with the popular YouTube video sharing website to offer the "Official Tour de France channel" featuring a selection of official race videos.

For more info and to check out the new YouTube TdF channel, click here .

2007 Tour de France in HDTV

As we reported back in March, France Télévisions will be shooting and broadcasting the 2007 Tour de France in high definition television.  The latest on this subject, from the official TdF website:

The Tour de France, a test bench of innovations in the media, will be filmed and broadcasted by France Télévisions in high definition (HD). The technological challenge promises viewers strong sensations.

The media have devoted themselves for more than a century to the mission of making the Tour come alive for their readers, audiences and viewers. The constant challenge has been how to bring the public closer to the pack. Since the arrival of television, all kinds of records have been broken in the Tour: the first live broadcast on location showed the finish of the last stage in the Parc des Princes in 1948, the first images broadcasted live from a motorcycle during the race arrived in the 60s… In the turn of the 21st Century, the images of the Tour are broadcasted in 185 countries all over the world: the production is guaranteed by 5 motorcycles, 2 helicopters, and 10 fixed cameras at the finish line.

The important operation set up is enough to meet the expectations of the most demanding viewers. The 2007 edition of the Tour de France will set a new milestone in the search for realism. With HD television, the sharpness of the image obtained makes traditional screens seem like something from the black-and-white era: an image composed before of 625 lines, now has 1,080.

France Télévisions and the teams of the SFP (French Production Company) have embarked themselves on a ground-breaking initiative. Although HD has been greatly used in the US (NHL, NBA…) and Japan, the filming and broadcasting of images transmitted live through HF, i.e. wireless, is a first in the world. As this is the most problematic aspect from a technical point of view, almost four years of preparation were necessary. The last tests were carried out in live conditions in Paris-Tours 2006 and Paris-Roubaix 2007.

Dauphiné Libéré Stage 6 Tomorrow

- The Tour de Suisse (Tour of Switzerland) gets underway tomorrow and runs through Sunday, June 24.  The official site coverage will include the Tour Live feature, developed by cnlab AG.  This coverage, which we have included for applicable races in our Live Guides in the past, involves the live transmission, at 30 second intervals, of webcam still images and data from within the race.  Unlike technology-challenged Tour de France organizer Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) who still use paper and pen and have long been hesitant to employ computer applications even at Tour headquarters in Issy-les-Moulineaux, the Tour de Suisse Radio Tour commentator uses a TabletPC connected to the TourLive system.  Tour Live is also delivered to spectators equipped with various Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs).  Hats off to the Tour de Suisse (and Tour de Romandie) organizers and cnlab for innovation.  A.S.O. could learn something here.

- The Eurosport live audio streams are playing today's stage of the Dauphiné Libéré.

- The France3 live video streaming may not be available outside Europe, but their archived coverage (available worldwide) is varied and excellent for those who understand French.  Each morning there is a report from the start village.  Yesterday's "La chronique, le Matinale" features a brief interview with two-time Dauphiné (and Tour) winner Bernard Thévenet.  Thévenet is presented a Vino-signed yellow jersey (France3 is giving away a signed jersey each day to webcast viewers in France) by his daughter Nelly , a podium girl (and hôtesse) at the Dauphiné.

- The France3.fr live video stream (Europe only) is playing Stage 5 of the Dauphiné Libéré.

- Our next Dauphine Libere update here after 14:30 CET (8:30am U.S. Eastern).

- The first Mont Ventoux stage video posted on France3.fr (see below) opens with lead race commentator Thierry Adam and consultant Laurent Jalabert standing at the top of the mountain.  Adam is taking over lead commentating for France 2/3 coverage of the Tour de France next month, with two-time Tour champion Laurent Fignon replacing longtime favorite (and also two-time Tour champion) Bernard Thévenet as color commentator.  Jalabert will cover the Tour live from the back of a motorcycle.

- France3.fr is archiving its live video streaming and is making it available for worldwide viewing as free Video On Demand (VOD).  Its coverage began with yesterday's stage to Mont Ventoux and will continue through the end of the race on Sunday.  The first archived video is a full hour of yesterday's stage to the foot of Mont Ventoux.  Click on the L'étape du Jour graphic above to open the France3.fr Stage 4 coverage page, then once on that page, find and click on the same graphic there to start the video.  You can also get there by going to the France3.fr Dauphiné Libéré coverage homepage, the link for which is labeled "Daily news videos and info" in our Selected archive video/audio clips section above.

- Today's France3.fr live video streaming is scheduled to begin at 14:40 CET (8:40am U.S. Eastern).  It is available only in Europe.

- Eurosport's live coverage should begin at around 15:15 CET (9:15am U.S. Eastern).  The live audio streams are available worldwide.

New book:  La grande histoire du Criterium du Dauphiné Libéré

A book about the history of the Criterium du Dauphiné Libéré has just been published.  Written by longtime race director, Thierry Cazeneuve , the book tells the story of the Dauphiné's champions from Edouard Klabinski in 1947 to Levi Leipheimer in 2006 .  Past Dauphiné winners also include Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Greg LeMond, Miguel Indurain and Lance Armstrong!

The book is in French and costs 29.90 euros (about $40 U.S.).

For more, read on:  (click on the graphic to order)

History of the Dauphiné Libéré As the only cycling race in the world that has been won by all cyclists who won the Tour de France five or more times, the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré keeps on exercising its wonderful magic over the world. As its sixtieth birthday draws near, its charm is still as great as ever. It paces dream geography, but its own history carries it. Lance Armstrong - and others before him - said : "This is the most beautiful race in the world after the Tour de France. And when you see that the greatest champions won it, at least one time, you feel invest with an obligation : to do as well…"
Since 1947, the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré has done nothing but grow and beautify. It always creates warm friendships, acting like a breeding ground for solidarity, and produces hundreds of memories.
Both a reference and a photo album, this book tells the great epic of the Critérium du Dauphiné Libéré through its greatest winners, from Klabinski in 1947 to Leipheimer in 2006, but also through the areas and cities of Rhône-Alpes covered in the past sixty years.

- The first rider in today's Dauphiné Libéré 4.2km prologue will depart at 15:27 CET (9:27am U.S. Eastern).  The last rider will finish at around 19:07 CET (1:07pm U.S. Eastern).

- Our next Dauphine Libere update here after 14:30 CET (8:30am U.S. Eastern).
