2008 Giro d'Italia: With just over 100 meters to go in
yesterday's Stage 17, Tony Martin (far left, Team High Road) has pulled off
the front as teammate Andre Greipel leads out High Road's ace sprinter Mark
Cavendish, with Daniele Bennati (Liquigas) on his wheel. Erik Zabel
(Milram), Assan Bazayev (Astana) and Alexandre Usov (AG2R La Mondiale) are
also in the mix but surely the win will go to Cavendish or Bennati.....

But no, it is Greipel who wins the stage ahead of Cavendish. High Road's teamwork was perfect
with Cavendish showing great class by being content to control the peloton while his key leadout man
got the day's glory. Respect.

- Speaking of June, the Dauphiné Libéré is fast approaching (and yes, there will be DL live video streaming
.) As is the inevitable publication of a number of pre-Tour books,
in both English and French, that deal with the subject of doping.
- Eurosport's David Harmon asked Kelly yesterday what he thought of Tour organizer A.S.O.'s talk last year of some form of return to national teams in the Tour de France.
Kelly doesn't believe it will happen and indeed invoked the usual
reasons people give ($$) for why there will never be a return to national
teams. However, we met in Paris earlier this year with a former director
of the Tour de France who says given the way things have been going between
ASO and the UCI, some form of re-introduction of national teams at the TDF is "inevitable....within 2 or 3 years." This matches our own analysis of the past couple of years and in June we'll post a transcript of our thought-provoking (and sometimes explosive) interview of the man who correctly predicted the global success of the Tour.
- Sean Kelly on Eurosport was just commenting on reports in
the Italian press that the Italian riders (Ricco, Simoni, Pellizotti, etc.)
may unite against Spaniard and current race leader Alberto Contador tomorrow
and Saturday. Kelly doesn't see it happening and indeed it seems the
Italian press has talked up this scenario in the past, with individual interests
ultimately and naturally being defended first and foremost. But the attacks on Contador will come...

Is Lance Armstrong on his way to Italy?
Looks that way. Lance and his latest celebrity girlfriend, actress Kate Hudson, were reportedly
seen in Cannes Friday night at a Cannes Film Festival party, then in Monaco for Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix. Perhaps Kate will get an introduction to the world of pro cycling in the last week of the Giro d'Italia...

for cyclingfans.com Notes:- Eurosport audio feed is now playing today's stage of the Giro d'Italia live. - Regarding cycling.tv access: If you are logged in to cycling.tv
and are only getting a page WITHOUT the usual links to the 100kbps, 400kbps,
800kbps, and 1200kbps feeds, then try clicking on the Live races tab.
That's what worked for us. (Yes, the cycling.tv interface is
horrible, shockingly so, but once you do get in, the feed is pretty good....and
with English-language commentary.)
- We have posted the complete start order and start times for today's mountain time trial below. - Regarding Giro live coverage on cycling.tv
: Many people are trying to get in to their live feeds all
at once. If you are having trouble getting in (we have not yet gotten
in ourselves), keep trying. What we do is this: Launch the cycling.tv
page to get it started loading. Then we launch our Giro player 1
or NRK feed separately. Check on the progress on the cycling.tv page.
(If we get a server error, then we try reloading the page.) Meanwhile,
we follow the race action on NRK. When cycling.tv kicks in, then we
stop the NRK feed. - Reminder: Eurosport yesterday switched to covering the French Open tennis tournament live. So the Eurosport live audio streams will be favoring that event. They may on occasion switch back to Giro d'Italia live coverage
, as they did for the latter part of yesterday's stage, so we will monitor
the situation and post any updates here. They are getting a little
rain in Paris at the moment. If it becomes enough to stop tennis play,
then perhaps Eurosport will go to the Giro.
- Giro live broadcasts are getting underway on NRK and Rai Sport. Start order and times for today's Mountain Time Trial:- Riders start at one-minute intervals. The final
20 riders start at three-minute intervals.
- There may be modifications to the start order
so that no two teammates start back to back.
