Notes:
- The gazzetta.it live video streams are playing.
- Giro d'Italia live video flash:
We have an alternative live video stream
for you
here
. (Thanks, Bernie!) (This is Norway television.
If your Norwegian is a bit rusty, as always you can mute
the sound in your media player and select the Eurosport audio stream
for your language separately.)
- Bernie says: "The Norwegian live video link alternates
between NRK1 and NRK2 so there is no way
to know ahead of time when it will actually be showing the Giro
." Thanks, Bernie. As of 16:00 CET (10:00am U.S. Eastern),
the link is playing the Giro live . It might not last until
the end of the stage and may go away, then come back.
- Demand for live video streams will be very heavy today,
as you'd expect. The gazzetta.it video streams should go
live a little later in the stage and we are monitoring another possible
stream to see if it goes live too.
- Eurosport's various live audio streams are now
playing the Giro. Cycling fan Yonathan recommends
the French feed for those who understand the language:
"The commentators include Richard Virenque and
Jacky Durand and their coverage is outstanding!!!" We
agree, Durand in particular is a natural commentator. Play-by-play
man Patrick Chassé is excellent and the entire team is
enjoyable to listen to.
- The RAI Sport live video stream has begun.
- Our next Giro d'Italia update
here after 14:30 CET (8:30am U.S. Eastern).
- Italian television RAI's coverage
of today's key mountain stage of the Giro d'Italia begins at
14:30 CET (8:30am U.S. Eastern). If the RAI Sport live video
webcast doesn't start then, it should begin at around
15:00 CET (9:00am U.S. Eastern).

Editorial
A very public defense backfires
Floyd Landis takes the stand today in his defense against
doping charges.
The Floyd Landis case needs to be decided on the
science. Is the evidence that he doped (LNDD analyses) reliable
or not? Did errors at LNDD have an effect on the results?
Both USADA and the Landis camps have contributed
to muddying the waters. USADA by bringing Greg LeMond
in to testify and the Landis camp with its own PR campaign
, which apparently included floating the name of Eddy Merckx
as a potential witness.
Thank goodness Eddy Merckx did not jump into this mess.
As we reported on Wednesday, citing French sports daily L'EQUIPE,
Eddy Merckx had no intention of testifying. The same
day, we immediately communicated the Merckx information
to the Trust But Verify blog which has been following, and
reporting on, the case from the beginning. We pointed out
that there was a huge difference between the amount of coverage in
European media websites and their print editions. We communicated
the information to TBV a second time (again on Wednesday) with an attachment
proving that despite what TBV claimed, L'EQUIPE was covering the story.
TBV thus knew on Wednesday that the Merckx
denial was verifiable. But with Greg LeMond set to testify Thursday,
TBV apparently wasn't keen on letting its readers know that Merckx
had no intention of testifying . TBV finally posted
the information on Thursday with LeMond's testimony inevitable.
We don't know what all this means but we do wonder how
independent TBV is from the Landis camp... It's one thing to have
a bias, another to be used as a PR tool.
With LeMond's testimony Thursday that Landis manager
Will Geoghegan had threatened him the
night before if he testified, this case took a bizarre and sad
twist. TBV tried to downplay the matter, calling it "a prank".
Whatever.
We think Greg LeMond is misguided in his approach
to "fighting" doping by only going after individual riders.
LeMond seems to go out of his way to go after American
cyclists. His approach also contradicts his statement last
year, with which we agree, that pro cyclists are in part victims
of a corrupt system, driven by hypocrisy among all the "leaders" in
this sport, from international and national federations to race organizers
to sponsors to team managers and team doctors and the media.
LeMond repeatedly allows himself to be used by the French
media and now by USADA. And for what?
That said, Greg LeMond was a great champion and demonstrated
courage Thursday. He put himself on the line individually
and that is more than can be said for just about anyone else.
Though it doesn't appear that Landis knew that
Geoghegan was going to threaten LeMond, Landis had himself previously
posted a threat to LeMond in an internet discussion forum.
Geoghegan has been fired, with the Landis camp having to deal with
the possibility that a strategy of having a very public defense may
have backfired.
This case needs to get back to the science and
hopefully it will stay there.
