Below is a guide to live internet/web coverage of the 2005 Giro d'Italia.

Note:  As of 14:00 CET (8am U.S. EST), the RAI TRE video streams are playing.  RAI TV race coverage should begin around 14:50 CET (8:50am U.S. EST) today so if you want to catch live action from today's exciting stage, tune in.  Hopefully those streams will be playing throughout the stage.

Also this week: Volta a Catalunya (Tour of Catalonia), ProTour
Today: Stage 6: Llívia to Pallejá

Alessandro Petacchi (Fassa Bortolo)
Alessandro Petacchi
Paris-Nice, 2003

Notes:  Alessandro Petacchi took the Fassa train to work yesterday, scoring his second stage win of this Giro.  Robbie McEwen has left the Giro to get ready for the Tour de France.  Stefano Garzelli, Stuart O'Grady, Jaan Kirsipuu and Baden Cooke have also departed.

It'll be the "bus" for Petacchi today as the Giro returns to climbing mountains.  Today is a whopper of a stage and the dwindling field of contenders for the overall, race leader Ivan Basso, Paolo Savoldelli, Danilo Di Luca and Gilberto Simoni will all be keeping a close watch on one another.  If a long breakaway climber doesn't succeed, then this stage may be one for Basso....or Simoni.

Today would be a perfect all-or-nothing stage for the Lampre-Caffita team of two-time Giro winner Simoni and defending champion Damiano Cunego, now out of contention after losing six minutes two days ago.  Young Cunego, for whom success may have come a bit too quickly, needs to regroup immediately to help Simoni or he may leave the Giro as early as this weekend to begin focusing on the Tour de France.  A one-two set of attacks from Cunego and Simoni, Cunego fairly far from the finish, would be the likely plan.

Below is a guide to live internet/web coverage of the 2005 Giro d'Italia.

Note: Having trouble accessing the RAI live video streams?  In some cases, it appears the servers are being overwhelmed with requests, so they just stop letting more people access them.  In other cases, the streams may not start until later than usual.  There were problems yesterday as well.  Only suggestion at this time is to wait a bit and try again and in the meantime follow one of the three live Eurosport audio streams and/or the live tickers.

Also this week: Volta a Catalunya (Tour of Catalonia), ProTour
Today: Stage 5: mountain time trial: Sornàs to Ordino-Arcalís

Ivan Basso (Team CSC)
Ivan Basso (Team CSC)
Mont Ventoux, 2004

Notes:  Fireworks were expected yesterday as the Giro entered the mountains and that's what we got.  The top three stage finishers, in order, Paolo Savoldelli, Ivan Basso and Gilberto Simoni represented not only the best on the day but some of the best overall Giro performers in the recent past and present, with Savoldelli and Simoni (twice) past winners and Basso looking in good shape to possibly win the 2005 edition.

When all the damage was done on the climbs, only Basso and Savoldelli remained at the very front.  It was reminiscent of Basso and Armstrong alone at the front in last year's Tour.  Only this time, Basso was taking the leader's jersey.  For good?

Savoldelli is in second overall at just 18 seconds and previous race leader Danilo Di Luca toughed it out to limit his losses, dropping to third place at 1:04.

Gilberto Simoni remains a threat in fourth at 2:27.  With his teammate and defending Giro champion Damiano Cunego having lost six minutes on the day and therefore out of contention, Simoni may employ an all or nothing approach in an attempt to steal overall victory.  He's a great, proud champion and will not go down without a fight.

Below is a guide to live internet/web coverage of the 2005 Giro d'Italia.

Note:  Pro cycling is of course an international sport and there are cycling fans all over the world.  So we've added links to our Giro Live Guide for non-English Giro coverage: Live Eurosport audio in Deutsch (German) and Español (Spanish) and Live Eurosport Tickers in Deutsch, Español, Français and Italiano!  So whether you are more comfortable with these other languages or simply want to hear the call and follow along in another language for a change, the links are below.  Allez Ivan!  Forza Joseba!  Venga Gilberto!  (That about exhausts our knowlege of these other languages.)

Time for the mountains, cycling fans!

Note:  Note the earlier than usual start times below for the RAI TRE live video feed, the OLN live video streaming webcast and the Eurosport live audio feed.

Also this week: Volta a Catalunya (Tour of Catalonia), ProTour
Today: Stage 4: Perafort to Pal Arinsal

Robbie McEwen (Davitamon-Lotto)
Robbie McEwen (2003 TdF)

Notes:  McEwen 3, Petacchi 1

Not many would have predicted a score like that at the halfway point of the Giro.  McEwen has simply been phenomenal in this race.  He edged out Alessandro Petacchi at the line yesterday by about an inch!

The first half of this Giro d'Italia overall did not favor the kind of sprint finishes that Petacchi likes but yesterday McEwen simply out-raced him to the line.

Counting the prologue, English-speaking riders have won 5 of the 11 stages, 4 by Australians.  But Italian riders Petacchi, Paolo Bettini, and especially Danilo Di Luca have had plenty of great moments thus far, with stage wins and days in pink.

Things should get even better for the Italians starting today as the race hits the mountains.  Time for a little fireworks from Simoni, Cunego, Basso, Garzelli, Cioni and Savoldelli.  And what about the surprising Di Luca, still in pink, and Michele Scarponi?

Discovery Channel's Savoldelli will have to fight the others without the help of climbing ace, Tom Danielson, who pulled out of the race the other day because of a knee problem.

Also this week: Volta a Catalunya (Tour of Catalonia), ProTour
Today: Stage 3: Salou to La Granada

Notes:  Finally a win for Alessandro Petacchi, in Monday's stage 9.  That no doubt put him, as well as his teammates, in a better mood for yesterday's "rest" day.  While Petacchi has found it rough going this year, after his astonishing NINE stage wins in last year's Giro, getting that first stage win can help remove the doubts that inevitably creep in when a sprinter keeps coming up short.

Below is a guide to live internet/web coverage of the 2005 Giro d'Italia.

Also this week: Volta a Catalunya (Tour of Catalonia), ProTour
Today: Team Time Trial

Guide to live race coverage on the internet/web
Dave Zabriskie and Ivan Basso (Team CSC)
CSC's Dave Zabriskie (Paris-Nice) and Ivan Basso (Criterium International)

Notes:  Fantastic time trial win yesterday for American David Zabriskie of Team CSC.  That was the biggest win of his career and confirms the strong ride he had in winning a stage of the Vuelta a Espana last year.

Even more significant for Team CSC is team leader Ivan Basso's second place, just 17 seconds behind Zabriskie.  Basso's work on his time trialing obviously has paid off and Lance Armstrong no doubt will have taken note of this performance by the third-place finisher in last year's Tour de France.

CSC Team Time Trial
With riders such as Jens Voigt, Bobby Julich and Dave Zabriskie, CSC should have a great Team Time Trial in the Tour to further support Basso.

Discovery Channel's Paolo Savoldelli finished third at 44 seconds.

What a difference 24 hours makes as two of the strong men from stage 8, Damiano Cunego and Gilberto Simoni of Lampre-Caffita lost significant time, 2:24 and 2:52 respectively.  While they were expected to lose time, the amount lost to a rider like Basso has to have them concerned.

And just like that, Basso and Savoldelli jumped ahead of the Lampre climbers in the overall standings.  Danilo Di Luca held on to keep the race lead for now, with Basso just 9 seconds back overall and Savoldelli in third at :35.

Two weeks of racing left though, with all the mountains.  But can Cunego and Simoni really work together to shake a confident Basso?
