Giro del Trentino
Frank Schleck (CSC) signs an autograph before the 2006
Paris-Nice prologue
It was only a matter of time before Team CSC's Frank Schleck
of Luxembourg got a big win. Just one week after teammate Fabian
Cancellara rode to victory in Paris-Roubaix, Schleck attacked his
breakaway companions within the final 10km of yesterday's Amstel Gold
Race and held on for the win ahead of T-Mobile's Steffen Wesemann at
22 seconds and Rabobank's Michael Boogerd at 46 seconds.
It is already a hugely successful spring for CSC whose
primary objectives are next month's Giro d'Italia and July's Tour
de France. CSC rider, Dave Zabriskie, leads the team at the
Ford Tour de Georgia which starts tomorrow.
Coming up Wednesday: La Fleche Wallonne
Sunday, April 16, 2006
Note: T-Mobile is once again making
live SRM data (heart rate, power (watts), pedaling cadence, and
speed) available online for a selected rider in today's Amstel Gold
Race. We have a direct link to this data in today's Live Guide
below, as well as a link to some information we posted about live SRM
telemetry last year. If you do not see any data displayed, you
likely need to install the latest Java runtime environment (link below).
You may want to do that soon so you're all set for the next race
where this feature is available.
Note: RAI Sport will be showing
30 minutes replay of today's Giro d'Oro at around 18:00 CET (12pm
U.S. EST), right before their replay of the last part of the Amstel
Gold Race, which they are not showing live.
Below are guides to
live internet coverage of 2006 Amstel Gold Race and 2006
UCI Track Cycling World Championships

Notes: Danilo Di Luca
(photo) is not back to defend his 2005 Amstel Gold Race title as
his main objective this spring is next month's Giro d'Italia.
This is the "home race" for the Rabobank team and they
have perhaps the best team on paper here and are led by Oscar Freire
(Spain) and past winners Michael Boogerd (runner up to Di Luca last
year) and Erik Dekker, both of the Netherlands. Several other
Rabobank riders have shown good form lately too, including Thomas
Dekker, Juan Antonio Flecha and Pieter Weening.
Another top team on paper is Quick Step, led by an
in-form Paolo Bettini and Filippo Pozzato, winner last month of
Milan San Remo. This is Bettini time and with teammates Pozzato
and Boonen (winner two weeks ago at the Tour of Flanders but not
competing today) already finding glory this spring, the "cricket"
is looking for a big win of his own.
But as cycling journalist Sam Abt likes to point out,
races are rarely run on paper. Other riders looking for glory
today are Alejandro Valverde (now with a year of spring classics experience
under his belt), Davide Rebellin, who pulled off a fantastic Amstel
Gold - La Fleche Wallonne - Liege-Bastogne-Liege triple two years
ago, Igor Astarloa and Samuel Sanchez.
