- We wanted to put together some crazy April Fool's stories for
today, with headlines like "UCI to sue Dick Pound for saying mean things,"
but these things are actually happening!
In case you missed it, Hein Verbruggen
conceded defeat
to A.S.O. the other day. He said: "I lost, but it's
less my defeat than the defeat of cycling." Which is why we've
referred to the UCI president (Pat McQuaid officially has the title) as
"Hein McQuaid" and at least as far back as October 16, 2006 suggested
that Verbruggen, as UCI vice-president, was still pulling the strings.
So in lieu of new April Fool's material, we refer you to our October
16, 2006 piece, "From Power Meters to PowerPoint". Here are the first
two Floyd Landis-inspired UCI PowerPoint slides, which were leaked to
us:
Click on the graphic or
here
for the rest of the UCI PowerPoint slides.
Poor Pat McQuaid, what a miserable situation he's found himself
in.

2008 Criterium International:
Sunday Stages 1 and 2
Revin (cyclingfans.com) - There was a little sun
here this morning when the peloton crossed the Meuse (photo below).
Rain is predicted for this afternoon. Mobile modem internet
connection is very slow in the hills of the Ardennes today, so higher
resolution photos will be posted later. Next update hopefully
before this afternoon's time trial.

Second update: Can French cycling be revived?
Revin (cyclingfans.com) - There was a protest this morning
(over local elimination of jobs) that stopped Stage 2 of the race
cold for about 30 minutes. The sun was long gone and it was raining
by the time the riders got up on Mont Malgré Tout.

I fear for the future of the Criterium International. Except
for this afternoon's time trial, even in France there is no live
television coverage of this event. Though that has been the
norm in recent years, unlike in the past I have yet to see a helicopter
here this year. More shocking, there were very few spectators
on Mont Malgré Tout compared to recent years.
Unfortunately, few french youth dream of becoming pro cyclists
these days. It is obviously a very tough sport and of course
the issue of doping hasn't helped. Kids see sports like football
(soccer) and tennis as having a better future and requiring less effort
than cycling. So French cycling for years has had a reduced pool
of talent to draw from. And the riders who do turn pro have been
criticized (by Bernard Hinault and Cyril Guimard among others), justifiably
so in my opinion, for not training seriously enough. For example,
I have looked through my photo archives and have not seen any evidence
that any French rider uses an SRM power meter on their bike, unlike top
pros from other nations. I believe it was Cyril Guimard who commented
a year or so ago that French riders HAVEN'T used them. How can
that be?! They need more support in using such tools.
How much do SRM power meters really help? Well, consider
this: The latest issue of Vélo Magazine, which just
hit newsstands this past week, mentions that the Cofidis team of
Sylvain Chavanel has finally started using SRM power meters this season.
And you may have noticed that Chavanel is off to his best season
start ever. The feedback you get from using such tools and comparing
your past and present results seems to have been a revelation for Chavanel,
given his comments in Vélo Magazine.
But is it too little, too late to revive French cycling?
I sure hope not. This sport needs some successes from
French riders. The future of smaller A.S.O. events like the
Criterium International may depend on it.
Time now to get to this afternoon's time trial...

- In our
cycling via satellite blog
, MJ Ray says "Enough of that cycling on wood
in Manchester ... there’s a lot of road cycling to watch this
weekend." He has posted information for satellite viewing
of today's GP de l'E3 and tomorrow's
La Flèche Brabançonne,
Criterium International time trial and more for those of
you lucky enough to have satellite coverage.
- Today's E3 Prijs Vlaanderen is underway too
(see live tickers above) with your classics guys and sprinters
such as Tom Boonen, Stijn Devolder, Gert Steegmans, Leif Hoste,
Stuart O'Grady, Fabian Cancellara, Thor Hushovd, Bernhard Eisel,
Roger Hammond, Filippo Pozzato, Alessandro Ballan, Juan Antonio Flecha,
Oscar Freire, Tom Steels, Baden Cooke, etc. Entirely different
set of riders compared to today's Criterium International. There
aren't enough races on the calendar to keep all that talent happy.
- 2008 Criterium International is underway. (See
live ticker.) There is an impressive start list for this
race: Defending and 3-time champion Jens Voigt, two-time
champion Bobby Julich, the Schleck brothers, Alejandro Valverde,
Alexandre Botcharov, Robert Gesink, Damiano Cunego, Juan Mauricio
Soler, Felix Cardenas, David Zabriskie, Magnus Backstedt, David Millar,
to name a few. And as Kristen wrote in to remind us the other day:
one of the revelations of this year's Paris-Nice, Clément Lhotellerie
of the Skil-Shimano team.
- As noted yesterday, we are not optimistic
regarding live video or audio streaming of this weekend's
Criterium International. If something does
turn up, we will of course post it here. But it is very
likely that the only live coverage available will be the official
site live tickers. If you are in France or have satellite
coverage of French television, France 3 is
scheduled to broadcast live coverage of the final stage Sunday
afternoon. If you have access to Versus, they will be
showing a one-hour Criterium International highlights show on Sunday.

2008 Criterium International:
Eve of Stage 1
Paris - The 2008 Criterium International
starts tomorrow, featuring as usual three stages over two days:
a Saturday stage designed for the sprinters, followed on
Sunday by a morning stage in the hills of the French Ardennes and
an afternoon individual time trial stage.
This is one of my favorite races to cover. I've
already said that about Paris-Nice and no doubt will say that
about other races this season. Each race brings something
different and in the case of the CI, packing three stages into two
days of sprinting, climbing and time trialing is a great chance to
see who is on form in these different disciplines.
This race has been owned in recent years by
Team CSC, with German Jens Voigt winning in 2004 and 2007, American
Bobby Julich winning in 2005, and Italian Ivan Basso winning in 2006.
Julich is also on record as the 1998 winner
after race winner Frenchman Christophe Moreau of Festina was
stripped of his victory for doping. (The doping positive,
however, didn't keep Moreau out of the Tour that year, the year of
the Festina Affair....though perhaps I should have mentioned that
in the "Dark Edition" of "Breakfast at the Races" to the right...)
Voigt also won in 1999 and thus will be going
this weekend for his 4th overall victory. The Criterium
International is perfect for a "puncheur" like Voigt or all-rounder
like Julich. Voigt and Julich, good friends, together have
won five of the past ten editions.
This is the 8th consecutive year the Criterium
International will be held in the Ardennes.
Unfortunately, race coverage for CI is limited.
France 3 will have live coverage Sunday afternoon. We
will look for a live stream but are not optimistic. There
should be live tickers, however.
With a 3G mobile modem and a good signal, I
should be able to report in from tomorrow's start town of Signy-le-Petit
as well as the finish town of Charleville-Mezieres. If I get
a chance, I will post some photos from roadside.

2008 Criterium International:
Eve of Stage 1
Dark Edition
Paris - I am deeply saddened to learn
from Fotoreporter Sirotti today via email that another former
pro cyclist has been found dead. Valentino Fois, 34, who
rode for the late Marco Pantani, was found dead this morning by his
mother. Though the cause of death is not yet clear, Fois, who
in 2002 was suspended for doping, reportedly was receiving treatment
for depression and cocaine addiction.
cyclingfans.com extends its condolences to the
family and friends of Valentino Fois.
