2008 Paris-Nice: Robert Gesink (Rabobank) has to do all
the work

2008 Paris-Nice: Stage 7
Cannes - What a fantastic race this has been with revelation
Robert Gesink of Rabobank confirming the strong riding he demonstrated
last month in California and Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner) using his
experience to grab the yellow jersey from Gesink.
It was exciting seeing and photographing the various groups, including
the chase group led by the yellow jersey, Gesink, riding into Cannes
yesterday along the Mediterranean (above image). For the location,
I want to thank Cannes resident and cycling fan Sophia for the tip. It
met perfectly with my photographic objectives for the day. Thanks
Sophia!
Near the podium, a French woman approached me to compliment me
on the cyclingfans.com hats. (At Tour of California we got compliments
on the T-shirts.) Race sponsors such as carmaker Skoda and yellow
jersey sponsor LCL had been handing out hats near the finish line, as
they do at the Tour de France and other races. Anyway, the woman
asked for my hat! Made my day.
Sunny and blue skies this morning in Cannes. Hopefully it
will continue this afternoon in Nice. Much of the rest of France
is supposed to get some rain today.

This isn't the hot Cannes weather of summer of course but everyone
is out enjoying a little early spring.

- cycling.tv, france4.fr, Sputnik and Tiny Eurosport live video
are all streaming today's stage of Paris-Nice. We assume Sporza
(Belgium only) is too but cannot verify. France 3 television is
also showing the race live right now.
2008 Paris-Nice: Stage 5
Cannes - Mont Ventoux, the site of yesterday's queen stage
of this Paris-Nice, can be seen for miles in the region. It isn't
called the "giant of provence" for nothing. You can see it from
the southbound TGV train as it approaches Avignon, a postcard view of
the lunar-like landscape rising in the distance above the Provencal city.
And you can see it for many more miles after Avignon's Pope's Palace
is long gone.
If you are ever inclined to see some pro racing in Europe in March,
Paris-Nice is a good place to start. Though this year's prologue
in Amilly was something of a dud (the usual and far superior location
in ASO's hometown of Issy-les-Moulineaux wasn't possible this year due
to municipal elections on Sunday), you can do worse than a few days in
Paris followed by a few more days in Provence, even away from the race (particularly
if you are accompanied by someone who isn't as into racing as you are),
and a weekend on the French Riviera for the race arrival in Cannes and Nice.
The weather here in Cannes is gorgeous today and the forecast
is for more of the same tomorrow when the race arrives. That's
why they call it the "Race to the Sun."
In this morning's L'Equipe: Apparently Levi
Leipheimer sent an SMS to Rabobank directeur sportif Erik Dekker the
other day saying, "Robert Gesink will win on Ventoux." Levi of course
saw firsthand what Gesink can do during the Tour of California. Gesink
didn't win on Ventoux (Evans came around and beat him at the line) but
of course he did grab the race lead.

Sisteron starts at 12:22 CET (7:22am U.S. Eastern) and is expected
to finish between 16:17 and 16:41 CET (11:17 and 11:41am U.S. Eastern).
- cycling.tv is scheduled to start live broadcasting of
Paris-Nice Stage 5 at 14:50 CET (9:50am U.S. Eastern). France4.fr
live video streaming begins at 15:25 CET. Eurosport schedule
shows live ski jumping today instead of Paris-Nice. (Thank you,
Patrice Clerc (ASO) and Hein/Pat Verbruggen/McQuaid (UCI). Good
job, fellas.) There will be a delayed broadcast of Paris-Nice
on Eurosport.

- For those with access to Eurosport 2, they will
be showing Tirreno-Adriatico live tomorrow.
- Very heavy access today, some people are unable
to access some streams, the Eurosport (English) audio feed and
Sputnik video in particular. (If a window opens but nothing
plays, it very likely is because the servers cannot handle any more
requests for streams.) cycling.tv has been working well though,
for those of you in North America.
- The tiny Eurosport live video stream and the audio
streams are now playing today's big stage of Paris-Nice.
- cycling.tv coverage back on, Sputnik working again
too, and the france4.fr coverage has begun. (France 4 on cable
TV playing the race too).
- Hmm, did Hein McQuaid just flip the on/off switch
on Paris-Nice race coverage?
- This is it, the first big stage of the 2008 pro
cycling season.

Paris-Nice to Mont Ventoux tomorrow
- Tomorrow's Paris-Nice stage finishes at Mont Ventoux,
the "Giant of Provence," though the riders will climb the north
side up to the Mont Serein station instead of the more familiar,
and more difficult, south moonscape-like side.
- We've just added yet another live video stream for
Paris-Nice, good old tiny Eurosport live video stream
. There's no audio but if you can get it interfaced to your
wristwatch, it would be pretty cool. Something for everyone
this week! (Bernie S.)
- All the principal live streams are playing today's
Paris-Nice stage. Remember, you can mute the sound in your
media player for a given video stream and select a Eurosport live
audio stream for your preferred language for your audio commentary.

- It's hard to believe it has been five years since
the death of Kazakh Andrei Kivilev following a crash a couple of
days into the 2003 Paris-Nice. Kivilev's death led directly
to the mandatory wearing of helmets in the pro peloton later that season.
The race today travels the road on which Andrei died and the second
of two intermediate sprints (see profile below) is dedicated to his
memory.

- Eurosport commentary in English is now playing
on both the English and Spanish feeds.
- For some reason, Eurosport's UK live audio
stream at the moment is playing on the Eurosport Spain
feed . So if you need audio commentary in English (alone
or to accompany the Sputnik live video stream), then select the Espanol
stream under Live audio streaming.
- Eurosport Germany is streaming live
audio of Paris-Nice.
- Cycling.tv is now showing today's stage
of Paris-Nice live.
- Paris-Nice is playing on Sputnik.
- Tirreno-Adriatico coverage breaking
news: Versus (the "home of professional
bull riding") has failed to come to an agreement with Italy's
RCS regarding live internet coverage
of Tirreno-Adriatico, which starts tomorrow. Consequently,
cycling.tv (who depend on Versus to secure
online rights along with television broadcast rights for RCS races)
will not be able to show the race live. As always, we are looking
at possible alternatives for live coverage on the web.
- Weather forecast in France calls for considerable
improvement in the south starting Thursday. Paris-Nice will
go to Mont Ventoux that day, then Friday should also see plenty of
sun with very mild temperatures. Nice.
- If you are watching Paris-Nice via Sputnik
but would like commentary in another language (English
for example!), then simply mute the sound in your media player and
play the Eurosport live audio stream for your language
separately.
