- Today's stage of the Tour of California is
a 15 mile (24.1 km) individual time trial around Solvang. The
distance is reminiscent of the final stage time trial from Versailles
into Paris (15.2 miles or 24.5 km) of the 1989 Tour de France,
won by Greg LeMond by just 8 seconds overall after 3 weeks of racing.
The TT course similarities end there, however, as the Solvang
course involves a short steep climb and some technical turns while the
1989 Tour final time trial was mostly a gradual downhill race against
the clock.

Below is our Guide
to Live Coverage of the 2008 Tour of California
2008 Tour of California photos from yesterday's prologue, by Pete
Geyer of cyclingfans.com in Palo Alto. (More
to come.) The sun was shining, everyone was smiling,
the cow bells were rattling, and a world champion time trialist
and Tour de France prologue winner won this prologue in the heart
of Silicon Valley. Though I've seen 18 consecutive Tours
de France as the French see them, on French television or roadside,
not to mention many other races from Paris-Nice to Paris-Tours
over the years, this is the first-ever race I've seen stateside. The
atmosphere reminded me a lot of the Tour de France because of
the excited fans, the Dauphiné Libéré because
it is not TOO big and is more relaxed, and of Paris-Nice because
of the scenery (in Cannes and Nice). I don't believe I've ever
heard cow bells at races in France though. This race has a
lot going for it and it already tops the Tour de France in some areas,
notably in technology used for live online coverage. It was a
pleasure to bump into the creator of the Adobe Tour Tracker, Allan Padgett,
as well as Anthony McCrossan, the voice of cycling.tv.
-Pete
Spectators enjoy the prologue
|
Adobe's Allan Padgett, creator of the Tour
Tracker
Allan rode the prologue course himself
yesterday morning. He said that the lack of GPS data
yesterday was due to a technology partner changing data formats
without letting Adobe know about it. Oops. But as
Allan told me, GPS data in a prologue isn't that interesting anyway.

for cycling.tv.

of California Tour Tracker
The 2008 Tour of California
is just three days away and Adobe ace developer
Allan Padgett is letting
cyclingfans.com readers get a sneak
peek at his latest version of the Tour Tracker
application which integrates live
cycling video streaming and multimedia data in real-time.
Allan has considered your suggestions and as
you will see a lot has changed with the Tour Tracker, starting
with a larger video window (at least in full screen mode),
two separate camera feeds, and
graphics and data moved to separate views.
The Tour Tracker will of course have to pass the test
with thousands of people connecting next week but so far it looks
like a winner.
The Tour Tracker
is constantly evolving; Allan continues to work on
it this week. This is your chance to test it out ahead
of the race to make sure it works on your computer (Allan says
it requires the latest version of
Adobe's Flash Player
) and to offer
up your comments and suggestions. Take the Tour
Tracker for a test spin
here
and
let us know what
you think
!
And if you missed
our "Inside the Tour Tracker" interview with Allan
last month, you'll find it

Last week's Stade2 program
on French TV
"That's practically the team for the Tour!"
Last week's Stade 2 program on France
2 television featured a report on 2007
Tour de France champion Alberto Contador. In
the south of Spain in mid-December, Contador, his Astana
team directeur sportif Alain Gallopin and
team manager Johan Bruyneel discussed
a variety of subjects including the planned team roster
for the 2008 Paris-Nice , Contador's first real
objective of the season (he won the event in 2007), the old Astana
team's disgrace at the 2007 Tour (Bruyneel: "Only the team
name is the same, everything else is different today."), Contador's
alleged link to Operation Puerto (Contador
was cleared early on) and continued suspicion. Said Gallopin:
"There's going to be suspicion but you have to do everything you
can to prove that your success is trustworthy." To that end,
the Astana team has adopted the same internal anti-doping program
used by Team CSC under the direction of Dr. Rasmus Damsgaard.
The named Astana
roster for Paris-Nice? Colom, Contador,
Horner, Iglinsky, Leipheimer, Muravyev, Noval, Paulinho,
Vaitkus. "That's practically the team for
the Tour!" exclaimed Contador. Astana should know today
if they will even have an invitation to next month's "Race to
the sun".

In today's print
edition of L'EQUIPE :
Tuesday, February 12: (cyclingfans.com) Johan
Bruyneel grants an interview to French sports daily L'Equipe
for the first time since the newspaper's August, 2005 allegations
of doping by Lance Armstrong. Bruyneel says he is prepared
for anything, including seeing his Astana team denied an invitation
to Paris-Nice and ultimately the Tour de France. Bruyneel
also regrets that there was much secrecy surrounding Armstrong's
training and invites reporters to come and watch Alberto Contador
train.
Coming up later
today: We look ahead to tomorrow's
much-anticipated announcement by Amaury
Sport Organization (A.S.O.) of the teams
invited to this year's Paris-Nice
which is less than a month away. Will the
Astana team of 2007 Paris-Nice champion
Alberto Contador get an invitation?

Fotoreporter Sirotti
Paris (cyclingfans.com) - The
2008 European pro road cycling season got underway today
as Frenchman Hervé Duclos-Lassalle of the Cofidis
team won the Grand Prix d'Ouverture La Marseillaise ahead
of Frederik Veuchelen (Topsport Vlaanderen) and Ryder Hesjedal
(Slipstream-Chipotle presented by H30).
Duclos-Lassalle's
win was the first in this event by a Frenchman since
2002. French riders took six of the top ten spots.
Hesjedal's third
place gets Team Slipstream, now the top American
team in the European peloton with the disbanding of Discovery
Channel/Tailwind Sports, off to a good start as it seeks
to gain entry to cycling's top races, including the Tour
de France.
The teams will
remain on the Mediterranean as the Etoile de Bessèges
race begins on Wednesday, February 6 and runs through
Sunday.

Note:
As a
rule, we do not announce the winner of a race here
on our homepage on race day because for many races throughout
the season, we know some of you come to cyclingfans.com
to watch delayed coverage or to view race video clips
and we do not want to spoil that for you. That is
not about to change but we've made an exception today because
the GP La Marseillaise coverage is so limited anyway but
also because this is a good way to announce
our collaboration this season with award-winning cycling
photographer Fotoreporter Sirotti (see above photo) who will
be providing cyclingfans.com with great race photos throughout
the 2008 pro cycling season in Europe. We
are excited about this collaboration as Sirotti will provide
us with photos from all the great races such as
Paris-Nice, Milan-San Remo, Tour of
Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, Vuelta
a Espana and many more. The European season just
got underway today -- we'll start updating our photo galleries
later this week with more images from today's race as well as
this week's Etoile de Bessèges (February 6-10).

2008 Versus Cycling Schedule - Is this the last year for Versus
cycling coverage?
The 2008 Versus
Cycling Schedule is out. There are several
notable omissions, though this is a preliminary schedule.
Races missing this year that were on last year's
schedule include: the
Tour of Flanders,
Amstel Gold Race, Tour de Georgia, Tour de Suisse,
and
Tour of Missouri. After
years of reducing its cycling coverage, with ratings predictably
falling since the retirement of
Lance Armstrong,
is Versus now phasing it out entirely? Could
be as a whopping 9 of the 16 races currently on their
schedule are races owned and/or organized by Tour de France organizer
Amaury Sport Organization (ASO) and their contract with ASO
is due to expire this year. (Will the contract be renewed?)
The 2008 schedule includes just four days of delayed
Giro coverage and just one day of delayed Vuelta coverage. Versus
last week announced it had extended the contract with its primary
property, the National Hockey League, with president Gavin Harvey
saying, "If you're into hockey, you'll stay for World Extreme Cagefighting...and
maybe even for hunting and fishing." Yeah, whatever.

An

Paris
- (cyclingfans.com) The 2008 Amgen
Tour of California gets underway
just one month from today and race sponsor Adobe, the
company behind the pioneering (read "bleeding edge") Tour
Tracker recently came to Paris to meet with Tour de France
officials who have expressed interest in the application.
Adobe has also been busy enhancing the complex process
of gathering live multimedia data in real time from multiple
sources so that cycling fans around the world can have the
best possible experience following races online. Toward
that end, Adobe has once again asked cyclingfans.com to
solicit your feedback on the Tour Tracker. What do you
like about the Tour Tracker? What don't you like about
it? What features would you like to see added?
Before
answering such questions, you'll want to check out

the creator of the Tour Tracker, to find out what kind
of live coverage we all might expect from the application during next

officials ready to give the Tour Tracker a shot? Click
